Contextualizing mental state information LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Simultaneously detect and interpret relevant verbal and nonverbal indicators of mental states • Recognize the content in narratives and self-disclosures that has predictive and explanatory value • Detect indicators in verbal behavior that reveal primary mental states, such as affects (emotions, feelings, moods), desires, beliefs, and knowledge levels • Infer complex mental states, including attitudes, motivations, and intentions, from primary mental states • Infer personality traits, temperaments and other characteristics from people through their narrative sharing • Infer the level of integrity and competence of people through their narrative sharing • Employ various methods to assess the veracity of verbal content • Understand your own word choice, sentence structure and use of figurative language • Contextualize relevant social and non-social content in narratives and self-disclosures • Identify inconsistencies in verbal and nonverbal behavior and detect contextual incongruities
